STOUFFVILLE ON – [MAY 31, 2012] Racing Edge Motorsports was in attendance for the opening two races of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championship on the newly repaved Goodwood facility. This event was packed with competition and was a very top notch racing event. REM was set with a large team consisting of 8 drivers known as: Aidan Landauer, Brayden Seberras, Rui Teixeira, Jason Assinck, Stefan Yasin, Richard Hibbs, Matthew Radaelli, and team principle Kevin Monteith. Drivers all experienced some tough luck throughout the weekend with minor racing incidents.
During Race one on Saturday REM saw a large amount of competition and the pilots of REM holding their ground throughout the stout fields of racers. In the opening class of the day, Briggs Senior, REM had one driver contesting in the category. Jason Assinck qualified on the outside of row one, then on to the prefinal Assinck ended up in second again but a slight difficulty in tech caused him to start from the rear of the field. In the final, Jason drove all the way back up to the final step of the podium in third place- solid run for Assinck.
In the Rotax Senior category, Rui Teixeira struggled a bit in qualifying but that would not dampen his hopes, Rui started 16th in the prefinal and managed to drive the Birel up to 11th position for the start of the final. In the final Rui was collected up in a turn one accident which saw minor damage but was able to repair it during a red flag and start from the rear of the field, Rui ended up with a stellar drive coming back to 11th. Matthew Radaelli was the next Senior who had a very tough Saturday. Matthew qualified 18th and during the prefinal was involved in a late race crash which ended his race. Matthew in turn had to start from the rear of the field but was able to salvage a 16th place result. With this come back, Matthew was looking for more on Sunday’s racing. Brayden Seberras was the team’s third senior, who struggled during the weekend. During qualifying, Brayden was unable to get a clear lap to put down a solid lap time and then during the prefinal was caught up in a lap one incident that ended his race. Then during the final, Brayden battled back to finish 20th which was a nice recovery to a hard day. Kevin Monteith was the final Senior who did not have the day he was hoping for. He qualified 6th, finished 6th in the prefinal then got into an incident with lap traffic putting him back to 8th place.
In the Rotax Junior field REM had one contestant from New York named Aidan Landauer. Aidan’s qualifying attempt was not what he hoped for as he put the kart into the 18th position where he would have to battle hard in the prefinal. In the prefinal he got into a small incident that spun him around and put him to the back at a large margin behind and he was unable to gain the time back. In the final, Aidan was involved in numerous crashes that he was never able to recover from where he ended up finishing 25th, a tough day for Aidan.
In the DD2 Category, REM had two drivers, Richard Hibbs and Stefan Yasin. For Richard, this was his first race back in a gokart in a year and a half so it took some adjusting but he managed well. In Qualifying he slotted his Birel into 12th place, then into the prefinal Richard got hit from behind extremely hard which broke the rear bumper off causing him to be meatballed and pulled into the pits where he started last in the final. In the Final, Richard came back to finish 12th- great run for Richard. The second REM entry in DD2 was Stefan Yasin who just recently switched over to the Birel so he had a major learning curve ahead of him. Stefan qualified 19th but during the prefinal was able to jump up to the 14th position. In the final Stefan slid back two positions to 16th.
In Sunday action racing was very similar to the Saturday results. In Briggs Senior Jason Assinck qualified 2nd again where he was able to drive to the win in the prefinal. Then in the final Jason was in a heated battle all race long but came up short finishing second, great weekend for Jason in his Birel AM29.
In the Rotax Senior Rui Teixeira came up with a great qualifying attempt of 9th position. In the prefinal he suffered a tough race where he was collected up in another accident and push all the way back to 20th place. Then in the final he pushed hard to regain those spots as he ended up in 13th position overall. Matthew Radaelli had a tough qualifying session as he put his kart into 19th position, then in the prefinal he was making up ground but got into another crash which pushed him back to 21st position. Then during the final Matthew was determined to regain some spots, he ended up finishing 19th. Brayden Seberras was the next REM senior driver as he again was held in traffic in qualifying and was unable to let his true potential show, in the prefinal brayden battled hard from the back to finish 17th, and during the final Brayden was pushed about and fell back to 24th. The final Senior, Kevin Monteith again had a tough day qualifying 6th, finishing 7th in the prefinal and then 6th in the final event.
In Rotax junior Aidan had a bit better of a day as he learned a lot from the Saturday race and applied it to the Sunday event. In qualifying, Aidan was only able to manage a 22nd position but that would not stop him as he battled through the prefinal to finish 22nd and again a very tough battle in the final to end up in the 12th position. It was a solid effort for Aidan.
In the DD2 category the times improved greatly as Richard Hibbs struggled a bit where he qualified 18th but in the prefinal pushed to gain those spots back and was able to get into 12th place. Then when the final event came, Richard dropped one spot back to 13th. Stefan Yasin, REM’s second DD2 driver qualified in the 20th position and when moving on to the prefinal Stefan pushed his hardest to gain a handful of spots finishing 18th and then in the final he gained one more finishing 17th.
Although this was a trying weekend for REM all the drivers and mechanics learned a lot and look forward to the next round in Mirabel Qc in mid June.
